Cognitive Abilities Related to Reading and Writing Skills in Chinese Third-grade Children

In this study, we analysed the cognitive abilities that predict reading and writing attainment in Chinese language for Mandarin-speaking children. A total of 140 third-graders studying Ningbo, Zhejiang were evaluated their visual cognition including perception memory, naming speed, vocabulary knowledge, phonological skills, nonverbal intelligence, to read write. The results multiple regression analyses revealed word nonword accuracy predicted a significant degree by memory awareness, respectively. Naming speed significantly contributed speeds regarding words, nonwords, paragraphs. Our also showed scores as well. Visual awareness are essential accurately, while is an important factor fluency. present have implications design useful tasks screen poor readers Chinese.
